We are the HTWK Robots - a robotics football team that participates in RoboCup Standard Platform League. Here, all teams compete with identical robots that operate autonomously during gameplay.
In 2018, we won the RoboCup in Montréal. As of 2024, we are the vice world champion.
Heute haben wir gegen das chinesische Team TH-MOS gespielt, welches das einzige andere Team ist, das ebenfalls mit Booster K1 Robotern antritt. Damit waren die Hardware-Voraussetzungen in diesem Spiel erstmals identisch – ganz im Gegensatz zu den bisherigen Begegnungen.
Das Spiel war sehr spannend und wir haben mit einem beeindruckenden Ergebnis von 11:0 gewonnen! Die Freude im Team ist riesig – jetzt wird gefeiert!

Today we played against the Chinese team TH-MOS, the only other team competing with Booster K1 robots. This meant that, for the first time, both teams had identical hardware conditions – a big change compared to our previous matches.
The game was incredibly exciting, and we won with an impressive score of 11:0! The whole team is over the moon – now it’s time to celebrate!
Heute standen zwei besonders aufregende Spiele in der KidSize League mit unseren Booster K1 Robotern auf dem Programm – und beide waren nichts für schwache Nerven!
Im Viertelfinale trafen wir auf das französische Top-Team Rhoban, das aktuell als eines der besten Teams der Liga gilt – gemeinsam mit TH-MOS und uns. In einem intensiven Match konnten wir uns mit einem klaren 7:0 durchsetzen. Besonders beeindruckend war die starke Verteidigung von Rhoban, die unseren Robotern einiges abverlangt hat. Ihre Roboter haben unsere Booster mehrfach ausgedribbelt – dennoch konnten wir unsere Chancen konsequent nutzen und das Spiel für uns entscheiden.
Direkt im Anschluss ging es weiter mit dem Halbfinale gegen das chinesische Team ZJU Dancer. Auch hier konnten wir überzeugen und einen weiteren Sieg einfahren. Damit ziehen wir ins morgige Finale ein – die Vorfreude ist groß!
Auch in der Standard Platform League (SPL) ging es heute ins Viertelfinale. Leider mussten wir
uns hier dem Team WisTex geschlagen geben. Doch es gibt einen spannenden Wendepunkt: Nach dem Spiel kam heraus, dass das gegnerische Team sehr wahrscheinlich mit dem Code von B-Human – dem aktuell stärksten Team der Liga – gespielt hat, ohne dies anzugeben. Ein klarer Verstoß gegen die Spielregeln. Daher stehen die Chancen gut, dass das Spiel wiederholt wird. Es bleibt also spannend in der SPL!
Alles in allem war es ein ereignisreicher Tag mit vielen Emotionen und starken Leistungen – wir blicken gespannt auf das morgige Finale!

Today brought some intense and exciting matches in the KidSize League with our Booster K1 robots – and both games were real highlights!
In the quarterfinals, we faced the French top team Rhoban, one of the league favorites alongside TH-MOS and our own team. In a thrilling match, we managed to secure a strong 7:0 victory. Rhoban’s robots showed impressive defense and some remarkable dribbling against our Boosters – but we stayed focused and took our chances with precision.
Right after that, we moved on to the semifinal against the Chinese team ZJU Dancer. Once again, our robots delivered a solid performance and earned us another win. With that, we’ve secured our spot in tomorrow’s final – and we can’t wait!
Over in the Standard Platform League (SPL), we played our quarterfinal match against WisTex. Unfortunately, we lost that game. However, there’s an unexpected twist: It turns out the opposing team most likely played using B-Human’s code – the strongest team in the league – without disclosing it. This is a violation of the rules, and it looks like the match will likely be replayed. So things are still very much in motion in the SPL!
All in all, it was an eventful day full of emotions and strong performances – and now we’re looking forward to the final with great anticipation!
Am Vormittag standen gleich zwei Spiele auf dem Plan: In der KidSize League haben wir gegen das deutsche Team WV Wolves gespielt – mit Erfolg! Wir konnten das Spiel für uns entscheiden und sind damit in dieser Liga heute schon durch mit unseren Matches. Ein richtig starker Auftakt!
Direkt im Anschluss ging es weiter mit der Standard Platform League (SPL). Hier traten wir gegen das australische Team RedBackBots an. Auch dieses Spiel konnten wir souverän mit 5:0 für uns entscheiden – unser zweiter Sieg des Tages!
Am Nachmittag geht’s dann nochmal aufs Feld: Unsere NAOs treffen auf das Berliner Team Berlin United. Wir sind gespannt, wie sich unsere Roboter schlagen werden – die Motivation ist auf jeden Fall hoch!
Ein super Start in den Tag für unser Team – jetzt heißt es: Fokus behalten und weiter Gas geben!

Two Matches in the Morning – Two Victories!
This morning, we had two games on the schedule: In the KidSize League, we played against the German team WV Wolves – and came out on top! With that win, we’ve already completed today’s matches in this league. A really strong start to the day!
Right after that, it was time for the Standard Platform League (SPL). We faced the Australian team RedBackBots and managed to secure another clear victory with a 5:0 score – our second win of the day!
In the afternoon, our NAOs will be back on the field to take on the Berlin-based team Berlin United. We’re excited to see how our robots will perform – the motivation is definitely high!
A fantastic start for our team – now it’s all about staying focused and keeping the momentum going!
Heute standen gleich zwei SPL-Spiele mit unseren NAO-Robotern auf dem Programm. Das erste Spiel haben wir gegen die Hulks aus Hamburg gespielt und leider mit 0-1 verloren.
Am Nachmittag stand dann das Spiel gegen das irische Team RoboÉireann an. In der ersten Halbzeit konnten wir mit 1-0 in Führung gehen, was uns natürlich motivierte. Doch in der zweiten Halbzeit hat RoboÉireann ausgeglichen, sodass das Spiel mit einem Unentschieden endete. Ein fairer Ausgang und zufriedenstellende Ergebnisse.
Doch das Highlight des Tages war unser allererstes Spiel mit den Booster K1 Robotern! Wir haben gegen das kanadische Team UTRA gespielt und das Spiel mit 17-0 gewonnen. Ein klarer Sieg, der uns sehr gefreut hat. Wie wir es auch aus anderen Wettkämpfen kennen, gab es zu Beginn ein paar Komplikationen mit der Hardware seitens unserer Gegner.

Today, we had two SPL matches with our NAO robots. The first match was against the Hulks from Hamburg, and unfortunately, we lost 0-1.
In the afternoon, we faced the Irish team RoboÉireann. In the first half, we managed to take a 1-0 lead, which gave us a real boost. However, in the second half, RoboÉireann equalized, and the match ended in a draw. A fair result with good results.
The highlight of the day was our very first game with the Booster K1 robots! We played against the Canadian team UTRA and won 17-0. A clear victory that made us very happy. As we’ve experienced in other competitions especially in the begining phases our opponents had some hardware issues.
All in all, we’re really satisfied with our progress and are looking forward to the upcoming games. There’s still a lot to come! Stay tuned and check out the videos on our YouTube and Instagram channels:
Heute ging es endlich los – der erste Wettkampftag beim RoboCup 25! Unser Tag startete direkt mit fünf Drop In Games, die für uns eine ganz neue Erfahrung waren. Die Idee hinter den Drop In Games: Aus jedem Team wird ein Roboter aufgestellt, und diese Roboter werden dann in zwei neue Teams eingeteilt – ein blaues und ein rotes Team, jeweils mit zwei Spielern. Die Herausforderung: Die Roboter aus unterschiedlichen Teams müssen nun miteinander kommunizieren und zusammen spielen.
Die Drop In Games haben unsere Booster mit 52 Punkten gewonnen – zum Vergleich: Der Zweitplatzierte hatte nur 24 Punkte. Wir sind mit dem Ergebnis sehr zufrieden und freuen uns schon auf die nächsten Herausforderungen!

Today, the RoboCup 25 competition finally kicked off! Our day started with five Drop-In Games, which were a completely new experience for us. The concept of the Drop-In Games: Each team sends out one robot, and these robots are then divided into two new teams – a blue team and a red team, each with two players. The challenge: Robots from different teams now need to communicate and play together.
Our Boosters won the Drop-In Games with 52 points – for comparison, the second place had only 24 points. We’re very satisfied with the result and are already looking forward to the next challenges!

standen einige spannende Testspiele auf dem Programm. Die ersten
Versuche liefen etwas chaotisch – unsere Roboter sind buchstäblich
übereinander gestolpert. Das Problem lag darin, dass wir zunächst
vergessen hatten, die Roboterzeiten zu synchronisieren, wodurch die
Abstimmung im Team komplett durcheinander geriet... Und noch den ein
oder anderen Bug hatten ;-) Doch beim letzten Testspiel konnten wir
einen großen Fortschritt sehen. Wir sind mittlerweile sehr zufrieden, da
jetzt alle implementierten Funktionen reibungslos laufen. Natürlich
arbeiten wir trotzdem kontinuierlich an weiteren Optimierungen und neuen
Ideen.

Today featured several exciting test
matches. The first attempts were somewhat chaotic—our robots literally
stumbled over each other. The issue was that we initially forgot to
synchronize the robots' internal clocks, causing team coordination to
break down. However, in our last test match, we saw significant
improvements. We're now very satisfied, as all current features are
working smoothly. Still, we're always exploring additional enhancements
and new ideas.

für unser Booster K1 Team: Unsere Roboter wurden offiziell für die
technische Abnahme der Humanoid KidsSize Liga vermessen. Diese Abnahme
ist entscheidend, da sie sicherstellt, dass alle Roboter die
festgelegten Maße und technischen Anforderungen erfüllen, um faire
Wettbewerbsbedingungen zu garantieren.
Großartige Neuigkeiten: Unsere K1 Roboter haben die technische Abnahme mit Bravour bestanden! :D Dabei

Today
was an important day for our Booster K1 team: Our robots underwent the
official technical inspection for the Humanoid KidsSize League. This
inspection ensures all robots meet the required dimensions and technical
standards for fair competition. Great news: Our K1 robots passed the inspection with flying colors! :D Additionally,
our robots had to demonstrate their ability to stand up
autonomously and were closely observed during this test. Be sure to

Heute war es endlich so weit: Wir sind mit unseren Robotern auf der Venue in Salvador angekommen! Die Spielhalle liegt nur etwa 20 Minuten Fußweg direkt am Strand entlang von unserem Hotel entfernt - perfekter Start in den Tag.
Nach ein paar anfänglichen Herausforderungen mit der Stromversorgung konnte es dann richtig losgehen: Wir haben den Tag intensiv genutzt, um an unseren Einzelprojekten weiterzuarbeiten und uns gleichzeitig einen Überblick über die anderen Teams in unserer Liga zu verschaffen. Und dabei gab es direkt eine spannende Überraschung: Es gibt tatsächlich noch ein weiteres Team, das ebenfalls mit Booster K1 Robotern antritt!
In der Humanoid KidSize League ist das keine Selbstverständlichkeit, denn anders als in der Standard Platform League gibt es hier kein einheitliches Robotermodell. Entsprechend groß war das Staunen bei den anderen Teams, als unser Booster K1 zum ersten Mal das Spielfeld betreten hat. Souverän ist er sogar die Stufe zum Spielfeld hochgestiegen und hat mit seinem stabilen Gang direkt Eindruck hinterlassen.
Wir bleiben heute noch so lange, bis die Venue schließt, und feilen weiter an der verbesserung unserer Booster. Morgen geht’s dann mit neuer Energie weiter, wir freuen uns schon jetzt auf die nächsten Tests und spannende Matches!

Today was finally the day: we arrived at the venue in Salvador with our robots! The hall is just a 20-minute walk along the beach from our hotel – the perfect way to start the day.
After a few initial challenges with the power supply, we were able to really get going: we used the day to work intensively on our individual projects and also to get an overview of the other teams in our league. And there was an immediate surprise: there is actually another team competing with Booster K1 robots!
In the Humanoid KidSize League, that’s quite unusual, because unlike the Standard Platform League, there isn’t a single standard robot model. The other teams were visibly impressed when our Booster K1 stepped onto the field for the first time. It even managed to climb the step onto the field without any issues, and its stable walking immediately left an impression.
We’ll stay here working until the venue closes today, continuing to fine-tune the performance of our Boosters. Tomorrow we’ll be back with fresh energy and looking forward to more tests and exciting matches!

Standard Platform League (SPL) teil, sondern treten zusätzlich auch
erstmals in der Humanoid KidsSize League an. Warum dieser Schritt? Unsere
NAOs begleiten uns seit vielen Jahren in der SPL und haben uns
großartige Erfolge ermöglicht, darunter den Weltmeistertitel 2018 in
Montréal. Doch die Technologie entwickelt sich rasant weiter, und der
NAO, mittlerweile schon über 17 Jahre alt, stößt zunehmend an seine
technischen Grenzen. Vor allem aktuelle KI-Verfahren (z.B. Reinforcement
Learning in Isaac-Sim und anschließender Sim2Real-Transfer) erfordern
leistungsstärkere Hardware: schnellere Aktuatoren, verbesserte Sensorik
und mehr Rechenpower – Bereiche, in denen die NAOs leider nicht mehr
ganz mithalten können. Genau deshalb setzen wir uns dafür ein, den
Booster K1-Roboter als neue Standardplattform im RoboCup zu etablieren.
Da jedoch in diesem Jahr noch die NAOs in der SPL eingesetzt werden,
wollen wir parallel in der Humanoid KidsSize League zeigen, was unsere
neuen Booster K1 Roboter alles können. Damit machen wir den nächsten

Countdown RoboCup 2025 – Why are we competing in two leagues this year? This
year, we are not only participating as usual in the Standard Platform
League (SPL) with our NAO robots, but also entering the Humanoid
KidsSize League for the first time. Why this move? Our NAOs have been
with us for many years, enabling fantastic achievements, including our
World Championship victory in Montréal in 2018. But technology evolves
quickly, and the NAO robot, now over 17 years old, is reaching its
technical limits. Modern AI methods (e.g., reinforcement learning using
Isaac Sim and subsequent Sim2Real transfer) require more powerful
hardware: faster actuators, better sensors, and greater computational
power – areas where NAOs unfortunately struggle to keep up. That's
precisely why we aim to establish the Booster K1 robot as the new
standard platform in RoboCup. Since the NAOs are still being used in the
SPL this year, we decided to simultaneously compete in the Humanoid
KidsSize League to showcase the impressive capabilities of our new
Booster K1 robots. With this, we're taking the next step towards the

Unser Team steckt momentan bis zum Hals in den Vorbereitungen für den RoboCup 2025. Neben dem Stress und der intensiven Arbeit steigt jedoch auch die Vorfreude auf die diesjährige Weltmeisterschaft, denn diese findet in Brasilien in Salvador statt.
Doch 2025 wird es für das HTWK Robots Team noch einmal besonders aufregend: Wir treten nicht nur wie gewohnt mit den NAOs in der Standard Platform League (SPL) an, sondern sind erstmalig auch in einer weiteren Liga vertreten - mit unseren vier neuen Booster K1-Robotern starten wir in der Humanoid KidsSize League.
Der RoboCup 2025 findet vom 15.07. bis zum 21.07. im Centro de Convenções Salvador statt. Neben den technischen Vorbereitungen stehen uns auch noch einige organisatorische Aufgaben für die Reise und den Flug bevor, da wir dieses Mal ja mit 4 weiteren Mannschaftsmitgliedern unterwegs sind.

Our team is currently up to its neck in preparations for RoboCup 2025. Alongside all the stress and intense work our excitement is growing as well especially since this year’s World Championship will take place in Salvador Brazil.
But 2025 will be even more exciting for the HTWK Robots Team:
This year we're not only competing in the Standard Platform League (SPL) with our NAOs as usual. We're also entering a second league for the very first time: With our four brand-new Booster K1 robots we’ll be taking part in the Humanoid KidsSize League.
The RoboCup 2025 will be held from July 15 to July 21 at the Centro de Convenções Salvador. In addition to all the technical preparation there are also plenty of logistical tasks ahead especially since we’re traveling with four additional team members this time.

Roboter bei 30 Grad in der strahlenden Sonne bei einem Lauf teilnehmen sehen? Nein? Dann hättet ihr mal beim diesjährigen Leipziger Firmenlauf
dabei sein sollen. Wir waren es nämlich und konnten bei dieser Gelegenheit unserer
neustes Teammitglied der ganzen Stadt präsentieren.
Normalerweise sind ja all unsere Roboter
autonom unterwegs, aber aus Sicherheitsgründen musste einer von uns den neuen, deutlich
schwereren Roboter (30 kg!!) am Henkel halten. Dennoch hat es super viel Spaß
gemacht!

Läufer*innen haben sich für unseren Booster interessiert, wir waren sogar im

Und nach über 2 km haben wir es dann auch ins Ziel geschafft.

Have you ever seen a robot participate in a run in the blazing sun at 30
degrees? No? Then you should have been at this year's Leipzig company run. We
were there and were able to present our newest team member to the whole city on
this occasion.
Usually, all our robots are autonomous, but for safety reasons, one of us
had to hold the new, much heavier robot (30 kg!!) by the handle. Still, it was
a lot of fun!
We were also keeping it up on the fashion, look at this stylish hat the
booster is wearing:
But it wasn't just the runners who were interested in our booster, but TV
as well. If you missed the report, you can watch it again on MDR aktuell
or read it in the LVZ.
And after more than 2 km, we made it to the finish line.
Thanks for the great experience! And who knows, maybe one day a robot
will be the first to finish the Leipziger Firmenlauf ;).
Dieses Wochenende waren wir auf der Night of Science bei unseren Freunden, den Bembelbots! Neben dem gemeinsamen Hacken haben wir auch ein paar Freundschaftsspiele veranstaltet, dieses Mal zum ersten mal als Stream. Auf der kommenden Weltmeisterschaft in Brasilien wollen wir dann alle Spiele live streamen!
With only a short time for preparations, this game is a challenge for both teams. By some calculations the temperature of the robots joints may not even have come down to ambient levels. This match was rematch for the group phase were we managed to draw 2:2. This promises to be interesting.
The first half started with us getting a few robots punished this left us exposed with only three robots on the field. However SPQR did not manage to exploit this weakness. With some intense play in the center of the field this half concluded with a score of 0:0.
The first actions of the second half were led by a strong attack from SPQR. Then we managed to clear the ball only to be fouled on the sprint to their goal. The second half continued to be intense as no team made any progress.
This left us in the second penalty shootout of the day. Hoping for better result than before, we bit our nails. The first ray of hope: we managed to shoot the first ball on the first touch, allowing the goal. We then followed with a great save from our goalie. The tension mounted as our second shooter lined up at the edge of the penalty box. This one had two touches on the ball stopping the play. The shooter for SPQR managed to score, equalizing. Our final shooter managed to score. This left the decision to the final two robots. The ball was in the goal, according to the team of referees.
With no decision after 3 penalties the tension and stress for our human members mounted. Now every kick counts! Our next shooter touched the ball twice. This left a huge opportunity for SPQR. Our goalie managed to save it.
However the rule for a sudden death after penalties gives a different priority to different actions. A shot at the goal that is saved is weighed higher as a ball not shot or shot twice. This meant the win for SPQR.
Congratulations to SPQR for the third place. This was a challenging match.
Full of confidence we enter the first semifinal of the day. Our opponents, the HULKs already got a taste of victory when we let them win against us in out last encounter. This time we had to discuss whether to repeat this gracious act. After a heated discussion we decided a clear victory as before was too much. We had to make them sweat.
So we went about creating an entertaining match for the spectators. No one wants to see one team beating another with a margin of 10 goals (Some teams should take notes). A comeback story seems to fit quite well here.
With this idea in mind, we opened the score in the first half. Making our opponents nervous. This whole time we were confident they would be able to equalize and score a winning goal in the second half.
At this point our devious plan nearly failed. The HULKs did start the second half with a timeout. Because of this our calculations were incorrect and the score at full time was a draw at 1:1.
We had just a few minutes de develop a strategy how we could let the HULKs win without them knowing of our plans. And then, there it was! Just mess up the penalty kicks. If we do not score they will surely win.
So with this plan in action we started the penalty shootout. At first our goalie managed to save the first kick of the HULKs. We still are not sure whether this was planned. But then our brilliance and cunning shone through as we touched the ball twice, disallowing the goal even if we score. This plan continued for the remaining penalties.
In the end we executed our plans to perfection. The HULKs are in the finals and did not suspect anything.
Our great plan to lead the HULKs to victory continues in the finals where we will also be present. As referees, but still we are in the finals.
After the group stage it is now time for the quarterfinals. We play Naova from Canada. As in the last match against Naova the game will be under Challenge Shield rules. Another change is for elimination stage matches like this one that the time will be stopped when a stoppage of play occurs. This makes for longer, more challenging matches.
After a eventful start to the match were many a robot was falling we managed to score the opening goal in the fourth minute. We scored again in the seventh minute. This time by a clever ball behind the defense's back. With 10 seconds remaining on the clock we scored the third goal of the match.
We started the second half with the most clever opening we could think of: a big pileup in the center circle. After this initial upset we continued to score in the sixth minute for a score of 4:0. However this maneuver cost us two robots who did not return in time thus we reopened play with only three robots. Despite this limited number of robots we scored again with just over two minutes on the clock. After a sprint to the front we score a sixth goal. Shortly after the final whistle blew for a final score of 6:0.
We can now advance to the semifinal. Our opponent is still to be decided: the winner of quarterfinal number 4. It will be either HULKs or Berlin United.
Good news: Our robots are all back from repair! We have a full team of seven robots to start the game with. In further good news, the field lines magically improved during the night.
And as one of our human team members put it before the game: "Wir müssen gewinnen.... oder verlieren. Aber unentschieden geht auch."
The game opened with a timeout for SPQR as some of their robots sat down after entering the field. After the timeout we hoped our robots would detect the referee's gestures to enter the field. Success! The robots entered the field when instructed.
The first half started with a kickoff for us. From then a dynamic game ensued with a brilliant pass combination by SPQR. We managed to score the opening goal in the 4th minute. In the last minute SPQR managed to equalize. This left the score at 1:1 at half time.
The second half started with kickoff for us again. How? The timeout at the start of the first half gave us the kickoff then. After a long seven minutes of back and forth we scored the first goal of the second half. In the last few seconds of the game SPQR managed to equalize. This leaves a final score of 2:2.
With this score we qualified for the quarterfinals and now hope for an exiting match against Naova.
Our second match of the day presents a different challenge, we play Naova. This team usually competes in the Challenge Shield under slightly different rules. As we play in the Champions Cup, we must adapt and use their rule set for this game.
The first half started off well. We managed to put pressure on Naova from the start. This led to us scoring the first goal in the fourth minute. At this point Naova were forced to call for a timeout as most of their robots were unable to play. After a timeout play resumes by all robots reentering the field under the same rules as at the start of the match. The first half ended in a score of 1:0 for us.
The second half started of strong. We managed to score in the first few minutes. After some back and forth action in the midfield we managed to score a final goal in the last minute of the game. The final result was a score of 3:0 for us.

Es war ja schließlich nicht so, als hätten wir geplant, alle sieben Roboter einzusetzen – wer braucht schon vollständige Mannschaften im Wettbewerb? Nachdem zwei unserer Roboter zudem äußerst kooperativ waren und sich während des Spiels selbst deaktiviert haben - wahrscheinlich aus Scham - sammelten wir wertvolle Einblicke, wie man am besten verliert. Teamgeist und Optimismus bleiben selbstverständlich unverändert hoch.“
This afternoon we played our second game of the German Open 2025. In this match we faced off against Berlin United, who, you guessed it, came from Berlin.
With hardware problems remaining, we played the first half with five robots. The first obstacle for both teams was to identify the referee and to watch out for their hand-signal. This signal allows the robots to enter the field. Both teams managed this challenge. After some back and forth play we entered the half time break leading by 2:0.
In the first few minutes of the second half Berlin put some pressure on us. We managed to defend and mount a successful counter-attack. In the end we won this match 4:0.

After our arrival in Nürnberg yersterday the German Open 2025 began.
Today we played the current world champion in the openning match.
In the first half, we could still defend and only conceeded 3 goals. For
a score of 0:3 at half time. Sadly the second half was not as glorious.
We conceeded another 4 goals for a final score of 0:4. This game still
gave us good insights into what needs to be improved.
Hardware was a problem: In the second half we only had a total of three
functioning robots. All broken robots have been sent to the "Nao-Clinic"
Current challenges are the detection of the newly introduced poses of
the referee for free kicks and other breaks in play. A good
implementation requires that the robots know where the referee is and
where they are on the field in order to find the referee from there.
